lake garda day trip

About this journey

Italy's largest lake, in a single day.

A Lake Garda day trip from Milan is the most rewarding way to discover Italy’s largest and arguably most enchanting lake — a stretching ribbon of crystal-clear water bordered by olive groves, lemon trees, and the Alpine peaks of Trentino to the north.

Our first stop is Sirmione, the most photogenic village on the lake — a fortified peninsula extending into Garda’s southern waters, crowned by the Scaliger Castle whose moat is filled by the lake itself. Walk the medieval streets, visit the castle exterior, swim from the rocky beaches if the season permits.

Then onwards to Desenzano del Garda, the elegant lakeside town that serves as the lake’s southern gateway. A walking introduction to its arcaded centre, the lakefront promenade, the harbour where Milanese come for weekend escapes. A complete Italian lake day, with the comfort of a private MPV from Milan.

What you’ll experience

Sirmione's castle, and Desenzano's elegance.

Private MPV from Milan

We collect you from your hotel in Milan in a comfortable air-conditioned MPV. Chauffeur service throughout the day — no train, no logistics.

Sirmione's Scaliger Castle

One of the most photogenic medieval castles in Italy — a fortress whose moat is filled by Lake Garda itself. Built by the Scaligeri lords of Verona in the 13th century. UNESCO-protected.

The crystal-clear lake

Lake Garda's water is famously clear — you can see the bottom 4–5 metres down. Time to walk the lakeside paths, swim if the season permits (May–September), or simply photograph.

Sirmione's medieval centre

The walled medieval village extending into the lake on its peninsula. Stone streets, cafés overlooking the water, gelato shops, the church of Sant'Anna della Rocca.

Desenzano del Garda

The lake's elegant southern town — arcaded centre, lakefront promenade, harbour full of pleasure boats. Where the Milanese come for weekend escapes.

Olive groves and lemon trees

Garda's microclimate allows olive groves and lemon trees to grow this far north — the Italian lakes' famous 'Mediterranean amid the Alps' feeling.

Pricing by group size

€950 for 2 people · €1.050 for 4 people · €1.100 for 6 people. Total tour fee, not per person. Includes the MPV, driver, fuel and tolls.

Swimming

Lake Garda is one of Italy’s cleanest lakes and very swimmable May–September. Bring a swimsuit and towel if you’d like to swim in Sirmione.

Sirmione Castle entry

The Scaliger Castle entry costs about €8 per person and is optional. Most visitors are happy with photos from outside — the castle is most impressive from the lake.

Driver vs guide

This is a self-guided day trip with a private driver — not a guided tour. The driver speaks basic English and gives orientation but does not provide commentary at each stop.

Sirmione in summer

July and August are extremely busy in Sirmione — the village can become crowded. We recommend early starts in summer (we leave Milan at 8:30am) for a quieter experience.

Boat tours

Optional add-on: a 1-hour private boat tour around Sirmione peninsula (~€100, 2–6 people). Beautiful views from the water. Let us know in advance.

What to wear

Comfortable walking shoes. Sun protection essential (Garda’s sun is intense in summer). Layers in shoulder seasons. Swimsuit if you’d like to swim.
