dolomites day trip

About this journey

The Italian Alps, in a single day.

A Dolomites day trip from Venice is the most rewarding way to escape the Lagoon for a day and discover the dramatic peaks of Italy’s most beautiful mountain range — a UNESCO World Heritage site of jagged limestone summits, alpine lakes and traditional Tyrolean villages.

Our first stop is Lake Misurina, considered the most beautiful natural lake in the Dolomites. The mirror surface reflects the surrounding peaks of the Tre Cime di Lavaredo — one of the most photographed landscapes in the Alps. Time to walk the lakeside path, take photos, and breathe the alpine air.

Then onwards to Cortina d’Ampezzo, the famous ‘Queen of the Dolomites’ — host of the 1956 Winter Olympics and the 2026 Winter Games. An elegant mountain town with chocolate-box architecture, designer boutiques, and dramatic peaks rising on every side. A complete Alpine day, with the comfort of a private transfer from Venice.

What you’ll experience

Lake Misurina, and the Queen of the Dolomites.

Private transfer from Venice

We collect you from your hotel in Venice (mainland) in a comfortable air-conditioned minivan. Your driver knows the route and the best stops along the way.

Lake Misurina

The most beautiful natural lake in the Dolomites. Mirror waters reflecting the surrounding peaks, a peaceful path around the shore, alpine cafés overlooking the views.

Views of Tre Cime di Lavaredo

The three most iconic peaks in the Dolomites, visible from Lake Misurina. The mountains that defined Italian alpine identity and inspired generations of climbers.

Cortina d'Ampezzo

The 'Queen of the Dolomites' — Italy's most elegant mountain town. Host of the 1956 Winter Olympics and the 2026 Winter Games. Designer boutiques, traditional inns, dramatic scenery.

Italian alpine scenery

Two hours each way of driving through some of the most dramatic mountain scenery in Europe — pine forests, alpine meadows, sheer limestone walls rising above everything.

Free time at each stop

This is a self-guided tour — your driver takes you to each stop and gives you time to explore at your own pace. No fixed schedule beyond the return to Venice.

The tour, step by step

How the tour unfolds.

A natural rhythm of the journey, adapted to the season, the weather and your interests.

Start

Hotel pickup in Venice (mainland)

Your driver collects you at 8am (or another agreed time) from your hotel in Venice mainland (Mestre/Marghera) or a central pier if staying on the island.

+ 30 min

Drive into the Dolomites

The hour-and-a-half drive north through the Veneto plains, then up into the mountains. The transformation from sea-level Venice to alpine peaks is one of the most dramatic in Italy.

+ 2.5 h

Arrival at Lake Misurina

We arrive at the lake. Time to walk the lakeside path (~20 minutes around), photograph the views, or have a coffee at one of the alpine cafés overlooking the water.

+ 3.5 h

Time at Lake Misurina

Free time to explore — many travellers walk to a higher vantage point for the classic Tre Cime view, or simply sit by the water with an Aperol spritz.

+ 4.5 h

Drive to Cortina d'Ampezzo

The 45-minute scenic drive to Cortina, through the heart of the Dolomites. Your driver points out the famous peaks — Antelao, Tofane, Cristallo.

+ 5.5 h

Free time in Cortina

About 3 hours in Cortina — explore the elegant centre, browse the boutiques (Italian designer brands, alpine specialities), have lunch at a traditional Tyrolean restaurant.

+ 8.5 h

Drive back to Venice

The drive back through the Dolomites as the afternoon light softens. Final views of the peaks before descending to the Veneto plains.

+ 10 h

Return to your hotel

Your driver returns you to your hotel in Venice. A complete day in the mountains, by 6pm or so. Time for an aperitivo and the evening in Venice.

Not included

"We didn't expect Venice and the Alps in one trip. The drive itself was extraordinary — the moment the Dolomites first appear from the autostrada will stay with us. Lake Misurina was the photograph we'd been waiting our whole trip for."

Driver vs guide

This is a self-guided day trip with a private driver — not a guided tour. The driver speaks basic English and gives orientation but does not provide commentary at each stop.

Winter conditions

Roads to Cortina require winter tyres December–April. Snow chains may be needed in storms. We monitor conditions and may suggest rescheduling if roads are unsafe.

Hotel pickup location

Venice mainland (Mestre, Marghera) is straightforward. If staying on the island, we’ll arrange pickup at a central pier — usually 8am from Piazzale Roma.

Tre Cime hike (extra)

For an additional fee, we can arrange a half-day guided hike to the base of Tre Cime di Lavaredo (4–5 hours). Suitable for moderate fitness. Best in summer.

Best season

June to September for full alpine scenery (lakes accessible, peaks clear of snow). October has golden larches. Winter has the magic of snow but reduces accessibility.

What to wear

Layers — even in summer, the Dolomites can be 15°C cooler than Venice. Hat, sunscreen, comfortable shoes. The lake walk and Cortina centre involve no climbing.
